It is also a popular metropolis which sets trends and offers a modern lifestyle, with a high standard of living and good infrastructure. The city has a bustling nightlife with an array of well over one thousand events everyday.

Germany is on Central European Time (CET) and is one hour ahead of Greenwich Standard Mean Time, 6 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time and 9 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time. Summer Time is in force from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

Berlin has a low emission zone
The inner city of Berlin is a designated LEZ (low emission zone). The LEZ covers the entire city area with the S-Bahn (city railway) ring. Vehicles entering the LEZ have to meet set pollutant levels and display a LEZ emission sticker. The LEZ sticker is available from vehicle registration centres, vehicle emissions, monitoring centres such as the TÜV (the German MOT), the DEKRA and around 800 authorised Berlin garages and workshops. Detailed information at: www.berlin.de/umweltzone and www.berlin.ihk24.de

Shopping
Berlin caters to the needs of all consumers - from wickedly expensive temples of consumption overflowing with designer labels to flea and antique markets, shopping malls, bargain stores and the whole spectrum in between. For luxury designers and international chain outlets head for Kurfürstendamm or Friedrichstrasse. For flair, trendier boutiques and hip Berlin labels browse around Mitte.

Business Hours
Berlin is the first area of Germany allowing shops and stores to stay open around the clock, Monday to Saturday. Many retail outlets have already changed their business hours and now open until 10pm, some even longer. However, no shops are open on Sundays.

VAT / Tax-Free Shopping
Value Added Tax is currently 19% in Germany. Travellers who live outside the European Union can obtain a refund on value added tax for goods bought in Germany. Save your receipts from your purchases. Get to the airport ahead of time when you are leaving. Before you check in your luggage, you can go to the tax free shopping reclaim office and get your receipts stamped and obtain a cash refund.

Tipping
Tips are officially included in all prices, but it’s standard practice to add a tip if you were hapy with the service provided. The following is a guideline:
Currency
The currency in Germany is the Euro.

Banks and Exchange Offices
You can exchange currency in an exchange office or bank. Many exchange offices are located at the airports or near the mainline stations. Berlin is also well supplied with banks, and all major names have branches throughout the city, with many opening late on certain weekdays. There are also numerous cash machines (ATMs) in all areas available 24/7.

Insurance
The Conference Organising Committee or its agents will not be responsible for any medical expenses, loss or accidents incurred during the congress. Delegates are strongly advised to arrange their own personal insurance to cover medical and other expenses including accident or loss. Where a delegate has to cancel for medical reasons, the normal cancellation policy will apply. It is recommended that citizens from EU countries bring with them a current EHIC card.

Smoking Policy
Under German law smoking is not permitted in pubs, restaurants, hotel lobbies and all enclosed public buildings.

Electricity
220 volts – remember to pack adaptors and only bring electrical equipment with voltage change facility.

What to Pack
Include jeans and casual wear. Smart casual for the gala dinner. Rainwear and comfortable shoes are advised.
